I am a Christian. This should not be too much of a surprise for the few of you still hanging around and reading this blog. My faith is an important part of who I am. My quest for faith consumed a fair amount of my formative years. It is solid now and beyond question or doubt.
Because of my faith, I embrace a number of social issues. I believe that anyone can reasonably expect to be cared for when they are too young, too sick or too old to take care of themselves. I believe that anyone can reasonably expect a fair chance at being safe, getting a quality education, getting a job and returning the favor to the next generation. There is plenty of controversy in this paragraph to keep most of us at the dining room table with a few bottles of wine for an evening....

This is one of my favorite songs...interesting choice for your entry today. I'm a Christian, too (I know you know). I'm going to add a dimension to your thought; all the major religions of the world besides ours-Buddhist, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, etc.-provide morally for the care of those you mention. Could it be that if we create God in our own image, and we love ourselves and others as ourselves, then our God will direct us to care for those less able?
You bring up an interesting point. I do have a correction. Christianity does provide a moral imperative to assisting the down-trodden. Check out Matthew 25:31-46 for an example.
I just listened to an interesting podcast at Philosophy Bites on the subjectiveness of God. I must say that I cannot agree with the idea that man has created God. It strikes me a bit like putting an ass before the cart (pun intended).
But, I again can fall back on scripture. "Forgive us...as we forgive those..." or Luke 10:27.
Tonight's blog will stir the pot up.
